Changing Background Color For A Forum.

How do I change the color for a input field? Also is there a way to put some text into a input field and then make it go a way when some one clicks into it?

I have bean looking all over the tutorials and I have not seen anything on the subject. Lol I probably missed it so if you know where it is please tell me.
